Cows With Guns
They say you aren’t supposed to mix business with pleasure. I want to know who this “they” person is. Anyway, when I’m not working I like to game, and one of the games that has captured my interest for the past 4 years is World of Warcraft. The group I play with has members all over the world, in every time zone imaginable, so there is always someone on, and always something to do. When we decided to form a “guild” (It’s a special kind of “group” in game that gives you special privileges) they came to me and said “build us a website” It’s very hard to say no to a horde of demanding orcs, trolls and tauren, so I hurriedly got to work.
For the Horde!
Our guild, named “Cows wih Guns” plays for a faction known as The Horde. They wanted to give the site a darker theme, since the Horde are the defacto “bad guys” (ask any Horde and they will tell you who the real bad guys are). Luckily, Blizzard Entertainment gives players of the game access to a “fan kit” with graphics and icons from the game. They decided on a theme, and we got to work. Since Alison plays with us as well, my wife wanted in on the project, so she got a change to flex her PHP/MYSQL skills on our Guild Roster Section. All the data on the page is pulled from a database and displayed on the page dynamically. Who said gamers are lazy?
The Result
This site was a labour of love for a group of friends whom I hold very dear to me. Some friends bond over a case of beer and a football game. How many people can say they bonded while slaying a dragon? For The Horde!
